DriveSense provides real-time hardware sensor readings like hard drive temperature to help you monitor the status of your hard drive. Advanced System Information displays data on your computer’s hardware, software, memory and processes that are currently running, and this data is more in-depth than what you would find in many other optimize system utilities, including the Device Manager in Windows. NetSpeed Analyzer determines when you need to optimize your internet connection based on how it performs on tests of its average and peak download speed. This feature will adjust several different settings in an attempt to get your connection to reach its optimal speed.

There are a many free online scanners that check your computer for viruses and other malware, including Trend Micro's HouseCall , and Malwarebytes , which is designed to catch malware that traditional anti-virus software misses. (For the Mac there's the free ClamXav virus scanner.) Every major antivirus vendor offers scanners. Trend Micro's Perry suggests getting a second opinion if the scan fails to detect an infection and running a second scanner from a different vendor. Chances are that if one scanner misses an infection the other one will catch it since they use different technologies. (Anti-malware software Malwarebytes works in conjunction with anti-virus products.)

System Mechanic’s manufacturer, iolo, displays a handful of useful answers to general technical support questions on their website. You can fill out a contact form describing your specific issue with the PC system utilities or call their telephone support number in their Contact Us section. The link to their Contact Us section is a little difficult to find, since it is located at the bottom of their website. It would make more sense for them to display it with the other technical support information. However, we were impressed with their response time. We received helpful, prompt response to our emails within 24 hours.

Since that first group of fixes I have continued to check System Mechanic to find errors. It is simple to check the Problems List on the Dashboard. If any are found I can decide to let System Mechanic fix things automatically or go to an area where I can do it myself. So far I have used optimize the System Mechanic Fix It option without another problem. While working on this article I was able to free up 80.18 MB of system clutter, repair 11 Registry problems, repair hard drive errors, and a few other things. Disk check started on restart after the hard drive fix was complete.
